Why is cocaine addiction so powerful ?

We know that cocaine dependence depends on the dopaminergic system in the brain, but we still don’t understand why it is so powerful. To study the mechanism, researchers used an animal model. Rats are rendered dependant to cocaine within days. After 60 days of abstinence, the dependence can reappear after a single dose of cocaine. Researchers are counting on this model to understand how the brain becomes so rapidly and heavily dependent on cocaine, and find treatments.
