Treating Neuropathic Pain linked to Diabetes

Researchers have discovered in mice the origin of chronic pain related to diabetes.

People with diabetes often suffer from persistent pain quite difficult to treat.

Researchers have tried to discover the cause of this pain in mice models of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. They have more precisely studied the role of the ion channel * HCN2.

In these animals, genetic suppression or blockage of the HCN2 ion channel on nociceptive neurons prevents the activation of secondary neurons in the spinal cord and suppresses pain.

A complementary study showed in animals with diabetic neuropathic pain, that the intra-neuronal concentration of an HCN2 activator is increased.

All these results indicate that the HCN2 ion channel is probably a target in the search for medication against neuropathic diabetic pain.

* An ion channel is a protein that allows rapid passage of ions between the outside and inside a cell.
