A surprising effect of morphine

Opoiods are used to treat pain. A new study in rats has shown that morphine can extend for several months neuropathic pain. Morphine can activate microglial cells in the spinal cord that then maintain a chronic inflammatory reaction. This important discovery needs to be taken into account when morphine is prescribed to patients.
