The scientific contribution of the 3Rs

The NC3Rs has published a video on the scientific contributions that the respect of the 3Rs has brought to animal experimentation.

The 3Rs are the three principles that are required for the use of animals in scientific research.

These principles, namely, Replace, Reduce and Refine, are taught during compulsory specialized trainings to people who direct or carry out experiments on living animals.
Presented in general as an ethical necessity and a regulatory obligation, the contribution of the 3Rs in the scientific field must also be highlighted.

It is for this purpose that the British organization NC3Rs, the National Center for the Replacement, Refinement & Reduction of Animals in Research, has produced and published an eighteen-minute video intended for the introduction to the 3Rs to future technicians and researchers involved.

This video highlights the three categories of scientific benefits brought about by the respect of 3Rs:

- the acceleration of the development and use of innovative models and tools that do not use animals
- the guarantee that animal experiments are designed and analyzed to be robust and reproducible
- the reduction of pain and stress and the biases they induce in the studies.
The video can be viewed on Vimeo or downloaded.
