Research on the genetics of obesity

A genomic study conducted in West Africa and the United States on African and African American people has tried to uncover genetic variants that explain certain aspects of the global obesity epidemic that particularly affects people of African origin.

This study revealed that a variant of the SEMA4D or semaphorin-4D gene results in an extra 6 pounds or 2.7KG. The researchers will study in detail the mechanism of action of this variant on cell models and zebrafish. Moreover, the same type of study will be repeated and expanded.
