A new model for studying genetic diseases

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a genetic disorder caused by a single gene which alters sexual development in women and men (1/10 000 births). The current treatment based on steroids is flawed. The European program MOST studied the effect of the alteration of this gene on the development of the zebrafish embryo. Discoveries using this model will be used clinically for the diagnosis of the consequences of the mutation in patients.
