The NC3R strengthens its collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry

The NC3R, an organization whose mission is to develop and promote the 3Rs in research, has just reinforced its collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry. For the last 12 years, this collaboration has not only allowed the proper estimation of the impact of the 3RS, but also contributed to the evolution of the regulation towards the removal of toxicity testing on rodents and the reduction of the use of primates for the development of biotech drugs.

The NC3RS announced today a field of interest, toxicology studies. The number of rodents, dogs or primates used in this context is considerable. For the last 30 or 40 years, the regulations have required that the tests are conducted on two types of animals: a rodent and a non-rodent. But in view of current knowledge and new technologies, the requirement of this regulation to maximise security is being questioned.

The matter has already been raised in the past. The NC3Rs will explore the issue again with the help of the pharmaceutical industry worldwide.
