How does fatty liver occur ?

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects 20% of the population but the onset mechanism of the disease still remains unknown. Studies in mice are helping uncover the potential role of PPAR-alpha, a natural protein found in the liver. Its absence leads to the development of the disease. Microbiota play an important role influencing the activity of the protein. These fundamental studies are essential to the discovery of treatments against fatty liver disease.
