The donation of cells to dispense animal models in research on bipolarity

Bipolarity is characterized by mood swings and bouts of severe depression. It is a poorly understood condition that is badly treated. Edinburgh University researchers are studying the disease by collecting cells from patients with the disease and members of their family unaffected by the condition. These stem cells are collected from donated skin cells and cultured with brain cells to study in brain tissue environments. Beyond the progress hoped in terms of treatment for this disease, the technique would greatly reduce the use of animal models.
