Ethics are at the heart of animal research concerns. They draw from knowledge and experiences to increase the obtained information and decrease the number of animals used and their constraints. They rest on the 3Rs principle and ethics committees and aim to improve the well-being of lab animals.

The 3Rs principle

Alternative methods are all methods that can lead to the 3Rs principle, which means it replaces, reduces and refines the use of animals for research

Ethics committees and project authorization

Ethic committees evaluate every research project that uses animals. The French Rural code sets the mission, structure and function of ethic committees. A favourable ethical evaluation is necessary to obtain authorization for the project to be carried out.

Living conditions of lab animals

The animals used in research come from farms. On arrival at the laboratory they are placed in acclimatization before being included in a study. Hosting conditions are defined by regulations.
