Cancer and immunity: what elasmobranchs can teach us

Elasmobranches include sharks and rays. This line of vertebrates that can be found in all oceans, developed over 400 million years an immunity that is probably at the origin of their great resistance to cancer and their incredible capacity to scar. Two characteristics that may be interesting for human health.

This is why researchers are trying to unravel the secrets of their immunity by comparing it to that of humans. An article reviews recent findings in this area regarding a ‘programmed death’ gene and the genes involved in antibody synthesis.
